Abstract
Most of the existing corrugated metal pipe (CMP) installed as culverts under our highways are reaching the end of their working life. There is an emerging widespread need to address this problem in an economical way that minimizes traffic disruption.

Introduction
Huntington, WV had a deteriorated CMP culvert under a busy roadway. This deterioration caused a sinkhole in the road which had to be repaired. Conventional methods were expensive and time consuming. There was a need to evaluate a less costly alternative repair method.
The Problem
A rusted 48-inch ID CMP culvert was sunk 25 feet under a five-lane mall access road into Barbersville, WV. This culvert had two 20° bends that complicated the job. Digging and replacing the old pipe would be very costly and tie up traffic for long periods.
